Overview

In this product, I led a team of software engineers and computer vision engineers to digitalize and automate inspection workflows for the construction industry, increasing productivity, quality assurance, and reducing turnaround time for tasks related to inspections and issues management.

Problem Statement

In the age of digitalization, we observed that front line teams in construction and facility management industries were still relying on archaic workflows to manage issues and conducting of inspections.

This largely leads to operational inconsistencies due to lack of standardized and systematic digital processes, resulting in progress delays, safety lapses, and lost in revenue.

Solution

Akin to a handy man's toolbox, I led the team to build modular digital inspection and issue management tools across web and mobile platforms that converge into a dashboard for monitoring of progress and collaboration.

The solution comprises of modules relating to 3 main elements: Capture, Analyze, and Action.

Capture:

  • Utilizing 3D scanning hardware, capture environments for purpose of collaborative remote inspections and computer vision analysis
  • Capturing of issues via digitalized checklists on the mobile app.

Analyze:

  • AI pipelines to process scanned assets for auto detection of issues
  • Dashboards to analyze issue trends

Action:

  • Basically assigning issues to personnel and tracking their progress via task management
  • Augmented reality meetings for light-weight remote collaborative inspections

Why modular?

I believe it's fairly typical that when going from 1 to 10, you may discover that the solution may have become too niche, and you need to move past the phase of doing things that do not scale to start validating the PMF for a larger market opportunity. So I led the team to start to modularize some functionalities that can be translated to adjacent industries, in this case, facilities management, which was another inspection intensive sector.

This resulted in two lines of product offering where one involved sophisticated hardware and AI pipelines that realizes remote inspection for construction, and the other lighter offering for real estate companies digitalizing their facility inspections. The overlapping modules were issues management and digitalized inspection checklists on a mobile app, and on the webapp there were dashboards, reporting, and other administrative features.

Outcomes & Metrics

  • Through paid pilots and PoCs we gathered early adopters, measuring impact of the solution against their current workflows;
  • 23% of reduction in turnaround time for inspections (productivity gain)
  • The solution also unlocked new remote inspection collaboration capabilities at the height of COVID-19.
  • Resulting in sign-on of SMEs and 2 enterprises across Singapore and China, in the 1st year of conception, which was promising for such slow-to-digitalize industries.

Product Management Activities

  • Designed the end-to-end solution and validated solution-problem-fit via research, user interviews, and with industry experts. This is done by breaking down the solution into various jobs-to-be-done stories.
  • Iterated based on learnings and refined product offerings to capture different market segments while validating product-market-fit
  • Managed stakeholders ranging from directors of companies (buyers), front-line workers (users of product), government contacts (EnterpriseSG, BCA, HDB, & IMDA), and internal leaders (CEO and head of sales.)
  • Designed the UI of the web app and first version of the mobile app. Oversaw the designs of subsequent iteration of the mobile app.
  • Managed a team of web developers and computer vision engineers across Spain and Indonesia. Ran stand-ups, conducted OKR discussions, and 1-on-1s.
  • Prepared decks, gave pitches, demonstrations, onboarding, and post-sales support
